THE GREAT FIRE OF LONDON.

September 3rd 1666, a big fire devastated the center of London. The fire has lasted 4 to 5 days.

Houses which are burning

The fire started in a bakery in the center of London in the morning. The fire may have started accidentally because of a candle, an oil lamp, a fireplace or an oven. The city of London was a medieval city, one of the big cities of Europe, it was mainly composed of timber houses, that’s why the fire spread easily. 14 000 houses were burnt, 87 churches and many businesses. Debris smouldered for some days afterwards. People became homeless because their houses had been burnt. St Paul’s also burnt down.
